Kids Martial Arts Classes
What is Aikido?
Aikido is a non aggressive martial art that aims to harmonise conflict while not using strength.
In fact when looking at the break down of the word Aikido: Ai – means harmony, Ki – means energy or spirit, and Do – means path or way.
How is Aikido different?
It is inherently very different to many other martial arts, with one of the most notable differences being that there are no competitive matches involved to progress within the art. Students work together cooperatively to help each other discover new concepts and become skilful through consistent training. Promotion takes place when graded by teachers who look to ensure specific forms and concepts are attained.
Will the kids classes be the same as adult classes?
Our kids classes are designed to be somewhat similar to the adults classes, in that certain rituals are done – such as bowing (which represents a readiness for learning and respect) and techniques are given for children to emulate. But there is also a lot of games with similar body movements or ideas which creates other mental pathways for the learning process to take place and also ensures that classes are fun.
The aim of the class is that kids can;
- Develop conflict resolution skills
- Train to quiet their mind and relax under pressure
- Learn that it is a choice to engage or not engage to an “attack”
- Learn to fall and roll safely
- Train to prevent an attack before it even occurs
- Learn a wide range of techniques to peacefully resolve an “attack” situation
- Develop friendships
- Play games that mirror aikido movements in a safe, nurturing and fun environment.
What’s needed?
Once you and your child have decided that Aikido is for you, you will need to purchase a uniform (called a Gi – something we can organise for you) which is made of a heavy weight material which is strong enough to handle all the techniques which are performed in class, meaning that regular clothes won’t get damaged. Other than that the only other thing needed to bring to class is an eager spirit!
